Six-Day Heat Health Alert Issued For South & East UK

We’re alerting readers that A six-day yellow heat health alert has been issued for large parts of southern and eastern England, with temperatures expected to soar above 30°C (86°F).

The Alert, In Effect The Following Region From July 9 to July 15:

• South West England
• London
• West Midlands
• South East England
• East of England

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that the hot weather could have “significant impacts” on health services, especially for vulnerable groups like older adults and those with existing health conditions.The Met Office predicts temperatures could reach 32°C (90°F) by the weekend, with some areas hitting 34°C (93°F).
All four countries are expected to meet their heatwave threshold, maybe for five or six days in certain locations, making this the most widespread and prolonged period of hot weather this year.

High Temperatures Are Caused By High Pressure:

There will be more and more sunshine as a high pressure system moves across the United Kingdom.

Temperatures will begin to rise as a flow of winds from continental Europe develops as that high moves eastward.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will have highs of 24-27C (75-81F) on Thursday and Friday, while other parts of England and Wales will see temperatures in the low thirties Celsius.

While some eastern shores will be slightly milder due to winds from the cold North Sea, the heat will continue to rise over the weekend, reaching maximum temperatures of 33 or 34C (91-93F) across southern England and the Midlands.

Why Is This Heatwave Dangerous?

Heatwaves Can Be Deadly In Addition To Being Uncomfortable The UKHSA Cautions Against:

• Increased deaths: particularly in those with heart or lung diseases or those over 65.
• Overheated hospitals and care homes: when safe limits for indoor temperatures may be exceeded.
• Higher demand for emergency services: due to heat exhaustion and heatstrok:

A recent study found that climate change has made June heatwaves in the UK 10 times more likely.Without action, extreme heat could claim over 10,000 lives annually by 2050.

How Much Time Will It Take?

This heatwave is not only more broad than our last two hot spells, but it also appears to be expected to last longer.
Especially in the southern and eastern regions, high temperatures are expected to persist until Monday.

After that, the outlook is ambiguous; some computer models predict that temperatures near 30°C will return by the end of next week, while others believe a move to something more unpredictable.

NHS and Emergency Readiness:

In preparation of a possible increase in heat-related diseases, the NHS is getting ready. Extreme heat was blamed for more than 1,300 deaths in England last summer. The six-day alert encourages individuals to take preventative measures and serves as a public health warning in addition to a weather forecast.
Residents are being advised by health services to phone 111 for non-emergency issues instead of overburdening A&E and to get medical attention as soon as possible if they feel ill from the heat.
